The Job Description/Specification

  • This job description summarises the work content and nature of the post and its role in the organisation.  It does not specify every aspect of the job in detail and broad headings covering only the primary responsibilities of the post have been used.  It is implicit that the usual associated routines & duties are included, and that staff will work flexibly and undertake the obligations required by the organisation.
  • Overall Purpose of the Job
    • The purpose of the Care provided by the Social Care Assistant is to support individuals who choose to remain as part of their local community and to socialise with others on a daily basis.
    • The tasks you undertake will be agreed upon by the Service User and the “Day Care Service” Manager once they have assessed the Service Users’ needs.  This will be written down as a Personal Support Plan, which will be kept in the Service Users’ home hub.  This document will specify your duties for each individual Service User you work with and it will be your responsibility to follow this and other supporting documents, reporting any changes in need that you or your Service Users identify.
    • The Social Care Assistant will be responsible for meeting the personal needs of the Service User.  He/she will assist in meeting the care support and daily living needs of the Service User and provide care and any additional support as required in accordance with National Care Standards.
  • Key Results Area
    • The following list gives examples of the type of duties you may undertake.  All of these should be done in a manner that encourages Service Users towards the maximum degree of independence and activity appropriate to their abilities:
    • To assist the Service User to rise in the morning, including washing, bathing and dressing, and maintaining a personal appearance
    • To assist with the preparation of meals, drinks, and snacks when necessary
    • To provide assistance with toileting and changing clothes and/or bedding where necessary
    • To maintain bathrooms and wash clothes (which may include soiled laundry) when necessary
    • To provide assistance with other tasks of personal daily living that the Service User cannot manage and provide general support as part of a caring team
    • To assist and encourage the management of medication or administer the medication where necessary and appropriate
    • To monitor health-related conditions such as dietary & fluid intake
    • To help the Service Users with mobility difficulties, or other physical disabilities, including incontinence
    • To help the Service User in the use of aids and other personal equipment
  • Duties & Responsibilities
    • To undertake or supervise the personal care of Service Users, in the preparation of appropriate meals, shopping & collection of prescriptions, and general household tasks
    • To ensure the Service User retains individuality and personal dignity by promoting high standards of care, and encouraging independence where appropriate
    • To ensure that different cultural needs are catered for sensitively
    • To respect the confidential nature of the work
    • To provide direct care to Service Users as circumstances require
    • To attend meetings, case conferences, and training courses, as required
    • To contribute to an effective system of communication within the team, through discussion and regular team meetings
    • To undertake such duties and responsibilities of an equivalent nature, as may be determined by the Day Care Manager from time to time, in consultation with the post holder.
    • To ensure that all policies are adhered to at all times, including, Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities, Infection Control, and Food Safety
    • To attend all internal training courses and undertake any other duties and reasonable requests, as specified by Management.
  • Professional Qualities
    • To respect and maintain a good knowledge of equal opportunities and have a detailed understanding of other cultures and some familiarity with diversity
    • To have experience in working with the elderly (formal or informal) is desirable
    • To show good interpersonal skills
    • To have the ability to handle emergency situations
    • To have effective verbal and written communication skills (in English, and other languages may be beneficial) and an ability to write simple reports
    • To have relevant SVQ or similar qualifications
    • To have the basic numeracy & literacy skills
    • To be open to learning new skills and gaining knowledge
  • Personal Qualities
    • To be honest, trustworthy, flexible, and reliable with an over-arching desire to go the extra mile for your colleagues and Service Users
    • To have the ability to work as a team member and have the flexibility to work on your own, in a self-disciplined manner whilst working unsupervised
    • To have the personality to work under your own initiative being level-headed, patient, and careful (a mature approach to work and situations that arise)
    • To have previous experience working in a Care / “Day Care Service” / Care at Home / Day Care environment
    • To have the physical strength and fitness to support the movement of individuals (which includes sitting up, rising, walking, and transferring) and assist with their personal care.  This may involve bending and exerting a moderate degree of muscular effort within limits determined by the Person Handling the Risk Assessment
    • To have the physical mobility to travel to, access (which may include stairs), and move around the hub and external areas and buildings
    • To have a clean, well-groomed appearance when in full uniform
    • To have experience in organising and facilitating group activities for an elderly client group
    • To have a basic understanding of elderly health issues and/or be able to relate to individuals, including older people.   This includes taking an interest in others, engaging in appropriate conversations empathising, and being respectful at all times
    • To have use of own vehicle
    • To be flexible in relation to times of work and care duties.
